摘 要:
In today’s competitive environment, data is a critical component to ensure any organization’s competitive success. In the past, the high cost of storing data determined the amount of data available ? for use with business critical applications and by users. Advances in storage technology, combined with the continuing decrease in the cost of storage itself, now allow enterprises to keep increasing amounts of data. In addition, users are demanding 24x7 access to information.
Most industry analysts predict that the amount of data stored by the typical organization will grow by almost 100% annually, and change in form. New types of data assets are contributing to this growth: including unstructured data like audio/video. As a result, where organizations were required to manage tens of gigabytes, they will be required to administer and catalogue tens of petabytes ? an almost 1,000 fold increase, in just a few years from now.
The response: rapid adoption of sophisticated networked storage technologies. Intended to reduce costs, improve performance, handle growth and centralize data management, storage networks introduce new management challenges. Unfortunately, achieving effective control has been elusive because point solutions used to run storage networks haven’t substantially reduced the management required. Why not? Because IT organizations are forced to deal with many separate interfaces, each with its own operational approach and its own copy of original data set. Cross training is obligatory because if a single administrator is absent, then a key system could go unmanaged. This situtation also forces organizations to independently manage separate data sets for backup, archival, quick recovery, off site, disaster recovery, test and production needs.
What’s needed is a unified, automated approach that addresses the management, protection and information gaps. By linking intelligence about the logical structure of information (what applications, files and directories plus the attributes of the data like security, rights and permissions) with the physical storage infratructure (what paths, disks, arrays, switches, and routers) in which it resides, storage applications will have the knowledge to take automated action if predetermined conditions occur. Only then will administrators have the necessary tools to successfully manage global data stores.
